Verichip Tracker
Verichip is the company that makes implantable chips for humans. The device is about two times the length of a dime. It will be surgically inserted in the shoulder or the elbow. Some reports say that the chip is sometimes put into the hand.
Verichip claims that the device is for emergency medical information only. However, many people worry that the chip will become mandatory, by employers, to track every movement of employees. There is already one company that has implanted the chip into the work force. The company is called Citywatcher (www.citywatcher.com).
There is some controversy with implanting the chip. For one thing, Wikipedia reports that up to 10% of people with the chip will get a cancerous tumor. The safety of chip implantation is questionable. The other factor is that a lot of people see it as an invasion of privacy. People don't want government and business trying to control them even further.
It is likely that Verichip will continue to gain support. As companies see the benefits of tracking their employees, more companies will require it. Added benefits of productivity and security will come from being able to track employees. Employees may not like the chip, but they won't have a choice.
With children, if the chip were totally safe, it would give peace of mind. Parents could always know where their children were by using their Verisign chip receiver. Many of us would like to track our children and this may provide one solution to that.
